Thomas Struth

Particularly significant for the gallery is the participation as a guide to the discovery of Rome, of an artist friend of Struth, and friend of the gallery: Vittorio Messina, to whom Struth wrote his thanks on the back of some photos. Now owned by the gallery.

The "Roma" series, twelve black and white photos taken by Struth from a special point of view. The black and white of the photos, and the thirty years that have passed since the artist's stay in Rome, show the visitor a Rome unthinkable today.&#x20;

The entire series "Rome" by Thomas Struth was shown in the exhibition PHOTO20ESIMO MUSEO D'ARTE CITTA 'di LUGANO, 2009 curated by Bruno Corà and is fully documented in the exhibition catalog published by Silvana Editore.

In a time when we are forced to change habits, ways of living also our cities appear different. Sometimes because we are obliged to take new directions to reach the ususal places, other times because the usual crowd simply disappeared. We must be open for new perspectives.


Thomas Struth seeks for silent spots, traveling through the cities in hours of total quietness, Luisa Raffaelli invents dark series suggestions in the nights. Ahamad Nejad stares at the city "à l'envers" revealing details that in a regular view are not captured, Marchetti Lamera chases the shadows that the sun traces on the asphalt surfaces. And Andreas Leikauf proposes cities like comics, Gabriele Coi breaks the city down and then reassembles it, while Miha Strukelj decomposes it into pixels. Francesco Sena reveals its shapes in the mists, Marco Memeo looks behind, or, being more precise, inside the signs that inhabit the urban landscape. Margot Quan Knight focuses on the problems of the homeless. Piero Gilardi reflects on how the human intellect generates different ways of living at different latitudes, and Vittorio Messina focuses on the ruins of the past. A look by Frank Thiel on a changing Berlin and by Emilie Di Nunzio Joly on immutable places filtered by a melancholy rain. Finally, Aurore Valade examins the city of Turin through the interiors, while Spencer Tunic offers us a nude solitaire in front of a church and Enzo Isaia makes the symbol of Turin, Mole Antonelliana, emerge like a missile from the mists. A monumental "Stargate" by Fabio Viale reigns over everything and becomes a gateway to the city.
