We are born into this world with memories from deep time etched into the interstellar spaces of our consciousness. The structures and forms that have flowered through the evolution of life still exist within us and when we look upon the myriad forms of the natural world, a thrill electrifies our senses. Or some primordial terror arises from ancient memories embedded within our synapses.
My paintings are poems to the mystery of existence. We are luminous lights of consciousness, but we are so infinitesimally small within the framework of the heavens. Our capacity to understand is limited by a mind seeking knowledge through the limitations of our senses. But in the creative universe we can soar through the poetry of our imagination and arrive at metaphors that synthesize our dreams and visions into experiences expressed through works of art.
My painting The Birth of the World, brings together images of sea life, lichens, gold, dark matter and the chromatic chords of color and compositions that arise musically from emotion and intuition.
I had done a series of paintings of primordial worlds in 2005- images that suggested the origin of life. When the Coronavirus overtook the world, its image became part of our visual and psychic landscape, embedding itself into our consciousness as a new form of threat. I remembered my earlier paintings, works that were unintentionally suggestive of the Coronavirus, and decided to make a new series of paintings that would mark this moment in time.
My world rises in a swell of dynamic movement and form; the dark matter an abstract composition in the background, creating a powerful color universe that my forms exist within. Dark matter and energy make up ninety five percent of the known universe, but it is imperceptible to us. It is a perfect metaphor for the limits of our knowledge and the profound mysteries that envelope us.
The Birth of the World is a metaphor of the ever-becoming nature of life- its infinite unfolding. We are here now and in time we will vanish and another form will appear- as the river of creation drifts through the immensity of space.
My paintings are openings into this surrealistic and chimerical universe.
The shape of life is a fluid phantom, which for a flickering moment, is ours to embrace.
